Electric Waves

Description : This painting (a painting on two canvases) is inspired by the pursuit of balance through mirror image. I executed many trials doing the works with both left and right hands simultaneously; however the two sides never looked as similar as I would have liked. So I decided to paint one work at a time, achieving the balance, repetition and emphasis I wished to portray. For me the calming blues and greens juxtaposed against the hot pink colour, create a sort of mesmerising, electric “hummm” sound. The work is comprised of two canvases. Each canvas 61 x 91cm. Total size leaving 1cm between the two works: 123cm (width) x 91 cm (height). My suggestion: This artwork can be hung unframed, or each work framed individually, or the two pieces being framed as one piece leaving say, 1 or 2cm between the two works.

I am an abstract expressionist artist based in Melbourne.

Through my painting I investigate the expressive tension of colour relationships, and the vast possibilities of applying paint to the canvas; whether it be gently or dynamically, observing the energy created.

Over the years I have painted and studied prolifically whilst working in supportive roles in education and legal settings. I have recently turned my full efforts towards my art obtaining formal studies in; Diploma Vis Arts - Swinburne University; BA with double majors in History of Art - Melbourne University; Double majors in Artists Books - Deakin University; concluding studies in BFA at Curtin University. As an emerging artist, I have been part of many university exhibitions. I have multiple paintings in private collections in Australia and abroad.

My subject matter is often the materiality of paint itself and how it responds when certain forces are applied to it. Unsure of what the final work will look like, I proceed with strict attention to elements and principles of art, compositional issues being vital.  I allow the work to inform my next response, resulting in a harmonious synergy between artwork and artist. I like to think that chaos meets harmony on the canvas.

Thankyou for reading about my journey!

Best wishes,

Evelyn Hambros :)
